Ashwin and Kohli gives India a thumping victory in first test against the West Indies

The Indian camp is all smiles winning their first match in the four test match series against the West Indies. This win is special as it is the first match that India played after Anil Kumble signing into the role of Indian cricket team’s head coach and recording their biggest test match win outside Asia. India defeated the West Indies by a huge margin of an Innings and 92 runs and leads the 4 test match series in the India tour of West Indies 2016 with 1-0.

The match was played in Antigua in hot and humid conditions which one would expect in the Caribbean. Going in to the match with five bowlers, India won the toss and elected to bat first. India scored a total of (566/8 dec in 161.5 overs) in their first innings with captain Kohli scoring a double century, Ashwin scoring a century, half centuries from Shikhar Dhawan, Amit Mishra and some useful contribution from Wriddhiman Saha. Kraigg Brathwaite and Davendra Bishoo were the pick of the bowlers for the West Indies having got 3 scalps each to their name and Shannon Gabriel got 2 wickets with some promising pace troubling the Indian batsmen.

West Indies having a huge score to get started off steadily but the plan of playing five bowlers by Kohli’s team worked well for India as they haven’t allowed the West Indian batsmen to build any partnerships and getting wickets at regularly. They weren’t many notable performances by the West Indies with the bat in their first innings except Kraigg Brathwaite and Shane Dowrich getting 50+ scores. Jason Holder and Roston Chase were the other two batsmen contributing to the team’s score of (243/10 in 90.2 overs). For India, its their pacers Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami who got 4 wickets each to their name where the latter did well in his comeback match after being out of the team with an injury. Amit Mishra, the leg spinner looked handy getting two West Indian wickets and also scoring a half century with the bat in the first innings.

Trailing by 323 runs, West Indies started their follow-on second innings but lost two quick wickets. Rajendra Chandrika and Marlon Samuels got a partnership going before falling to Ashwin who later on went to get his first five-fer outside Asia. Devendra Bishoo and Carlos Brathwaite in the tail awaited the win for India for quite some time hanging in at the crease but its once again Ashwin who got break through to the team handing over India their first even biggest win outside Asia. R Ashwin was handed the man of the match award for his century 113(253) and 7 wickets to his name.
